International Car Rentals Explained PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Ask any experienced world traveler about their biggest challenges, and many will admit that it's the traveling itself.  But it's not the voyage to the destination that's the problem; it's traveling within foreign cities that can be tricky.

Public transportation in most international cities is clean, secure, reliable and affordable.  Many travelers, however, are confused or overwhelmed by mass transit systems in foreign countries.  These people prefer to have their own vehicles, and in many cases will opt for international car rentals to travel from place to place.

There are many points to consider when arranging international car rentals.  In order to have fewer hassles and expenses while traveling, these factors must always be kept top of mind.

North America

While traveling within North America, people are usually free to journey within Canada and Mexico in an American-based car rental.  However, it's important to remember that the insurance included with the rented vehicle will not include coverage once you leave the country.  Check your rental contracts if you're not sure about international insurance coverage.

If you rent a car in the United States and plan to drive in Mexico, be particularly careful about your insurance coverage.  While it is possible to purchase special car insurance for traveling in Mexico, it's not recommended for casual tourists to drive to Mexico.  Instead, travelers are encouraged to park their vehicles in border parking lots and take a shuttle bus on the way to the border.

International Permit

Before assuming that you can drive in any international country, whether the United States, Mexico, Europe or any other area, you should consider obtaining an international permit for driving. Although an international driver's permit is not a legal requirement in all countries, it's a good idea to obtain one for security purposes.   The cost of acquiring an international driver's license can be quite high, but it can be a significant requirement for those planning to travel around the globe.  In the United States, international driver's licenses can be obtained from any AAA office. Keep in mind that these are merely translations into a few other languages of your official driver's license: they do not stand on their own as a "license".  Don't get scammed by online services promising to sell you a license that you can use in your home country.  The local cops in your own jurisdiction will laugh at it, or worse, arrest you for trying to scam them.

Check with your current automobile insurance provider to see if they cover you while driving a rented car, and while driving in a foreign country.  If you are not covered, ask about buying an additional policy that will suit your travel needs.  In addition, you should confirm with your credit card provider whether their car rental insurance coverage is applicable to international driving.

Dealing with a car rental company will normally cost less if you take care of the details prior to your scheduled departure date.  Don't wait until the last minute to book your rental.  Your trip can be ruined if you're asked to settle for a car that you don't like.

European Car Rentals

If renting a car in Europe, it's a good idea to opt for compact or subcompact vehicle.  These cars can be really helpful in navigating the narrow city streets common to European cities, and for squeezing into the few-and-far-between parking spaces.  Small, comfortable vehicles are often the rule of thumb for international car rentals.

You can often get a discount if you combine your international car rental with a rail pass.  Check with your travel agent to see of this special offer is available to you.  Some airlines and hotels offer special deals for customers who have rented cars.  Find out which deals are available, and take advantage of every possible discount.

Gasoline and diesel fuel prices are usually higher in foreign countries than they are in North America.  Be sure to allow a little extra for fuel costs when planning your vacation budget.  This is another reason to choose a small vehicle over a larger, gas-guzzling model.

Any trip can become expensive and tiresome, so do your best to avoid stressing yourself out over the details.  Plan ahead for your international car rental and avoid any potential hassles or headaches.  Your reward will be in the priceless experiences you'll share and memories you'll have for a lifetime.
